NEREA GIL

Lives and works in Parisnerea.gmn@hotmail.com
@_nerea_gil

Nerea Gil’s work explores the traces of everyday life, focusing on how ordinary objects, spaces, and materials activate memory, perception, and narrative. A multidisciplinary artist born in Spain and currently based in Paris, her practice spans sculpture, installation, sound, and visual media. Her work often establishes a dialogue between past and present, engaging with the urban environment and collective experiences while opening spaces for shared meaning.

Her practice is interested in everyday elements and popular symbols, exploring their cultural and affective charge as well as their capacity to generate new readings. Through the investigation of different supports and media—often used to subvert their habitual function—she displaces their meanings and questions established associations between form, function, and desirability.

The artist works through processes that emphasize observation, accumulation, and transformation, often incorporating collaborative and participatory approaches. Through diverse formats, she examines how the familiar can be reactivated, allowing subtle gestures and overlooked elements to generate new narratives and forms of attention. Her practice is grounded in an interest in the sensitive dimensions of everyday life, where personal and collective memories intersect.

Currently, Nerea Gil is engaged in various artistic projects while participating in a pilot program within a nursing home (EHPAD) in Asnières-sur-Seine. This context extends her reflection on mediation, participation, and the experiential qualities of daily life, positioning the artistic process itself as a space for encounter, care, and shared perception.

Dispositif pour une perception élargie, 2023. Nerea Gil and collaborators. Video installation 2’50”. Monitor, carpet, correspondence, and postcard display stand, variable dimensions. Exhibition Terra Ferma, 2023. Galerie HCE, Saint-Denis, FR.Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project originated from a workshop with the artist Jimena Croceri and was inspired by Baptiste Morizot’s text Une crise de la sensibilité. It is based on a postal exchange in which postcards were sent with open instructions inviting participants to respond freely through texts, drawings, collages, videos, or other forms.The installation presents these contributions through two elements: a video that digitally reinterprets the responses and a wall display showing the physical materials. Postcards are also available for visitors to take, encouraging them to continue the exchange.The work explores forms of communication, presence, and co-creation at a distance, highlighting how collective creation can emerge from simple acts of response and connection.A collaborative project with: Miguel Pozo, Miguel Rodriguez, Marc Lafitte, Marina Suárez, Lycantho, Morgana Horst, Montserrat Aránega, Samy Barret, J. S. Hubert, G. Quidet, Maira Teixeira de Farias, Esther Truzmán, Esther Muñoz, Kamel Ziane, and Loreto Sotelo.

Translatio. Sur les traces de Vincennes, 2020. Stone, variable dimensions. Curated by Horthense Soichet . Exhibition « Images des mondes urbains» .&#38;nbsp; Paris 8. Paris, FR&#38;nbsp; © Nerea Gil — Photo: Horthense Soichet.At the center of the exhibition space rests a block of raw stone, whose silent presence concentrates the stakes of the work. This fragment comes from the former site of Université Paris 8 Vincennes–Saint-Denis, destroyed several decades ago, and was moved to the current university campus. The work does not transform the material; it shifts its context. This simple gesture — transporting a stone from a disappeared place to its inheriting instituion — acts as a symbolic act. The stone then becomes a clue, a material trace that reactivates a fragmentary memory. More than an object, it embodies a pas- sage, a survival, a fragile link between an erased past and a present that receives it.

Audio excerpts

Enquête sonore des habitants: Cité Charles-Hermite is a project developed within the Ecology of Arts and Media Master’s program at Université Paris 8. Based on attentive listening and encounters with residents of the Charles-Hermite neighborhood in Aubervilliers, the work gathers testimonies about their perception of the everyday sound environment—familiar noises, disturbances, pleasures, and personal stories linked to the place. These narratives form a sensitive mapping of the neighborhood’s acoustic landscape.Presented through posters equipped with QR codes linking to audio and video recordings, the installation transforms public space into a site of shared listening. Combining sensitive research and documentary creation, the project explores how sound shapes our relationship to place and our experience of collective life.

Dispositif pour une perception élargie, 2023. Nerea Gil and collaborators. Video installation 2’50”. Monitor, carpet, correspondence, and postcard display stand, variable dimensions. Exhibition Terra Ferma, 2023. Galerie HCE, Saint-Denis, FR.

Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, this project originated from a workshop with the artist Jimena Croceri and was inspired by Baptiste Morizot’s text Une crise de la sensibilité.

The AS series focuses on the figures of the aces from the Baraja española, isolated and presented as autonomous forms. Each drawing gathers and reinterprets the images of the aces—cups, swords, coins, and clubs—detaching them from their utilitarian function within the game. Through the repetition and variation of these cards, the compositions highlight the singular presence of these figures and the particular role they occupy in the structure of the game. The drawings emphasize the strength and scope of these images, capable of concentrating a range of stakes and meanings into a single figure, thus revealing the symbolic power they carry.

Jackpot, 2024. Mixed media, 45 x 14 x 14 cm.&#38;nbsp; © Eva Chamosa.
Jackpot is a sculpture that reinterprets the imagery of slot machines using everyday materials. Rolls of toilet paper decorated with symbols related to luck, work, and health are aligned on a metal bar and can be set in motion by the viewer. Through this simple and fragile reconstruction, the work draws a parallel between the logic of gambling and that of labor, where chance, precarity, and productivity intersect. Both playful and critical, it highlights the sometimes arbitrary and absurd nature of the systems that structure our social and professional lives.

This series of watercolors emerges from the fragments of a previous work, Jackpot, a fragile sculpture that remained in a domestic space and gradually disintegrated. The symbols of the slot machine are recomposed within everyday scenes, where they subtly blend into the domestic environment. These images function as contemporary still lifes in which real objects and traces of a vanished work intertwine. Between the ordinary and the symbolic, the series transforms the material fragility of the original piece into a pictorial driving force, allowing the randomness of the game to circulate within the intimacy of daily life.

A state of mind serie (serie and&#38;nbsp;details&#38;nbsp;), 2025. Acrylic on doormat, variable dimensions, cm. © Eva Chamosa

The installation features a series of doormats displayed on the wall, each bearing phrases inspired by personal development and managerial discourse. These imperative slogans transform expressions of uncertainty into calls for self-optimization, reflecting an individualistic vision of success. Positioned between the banality of motivational mantras and the possibility of a critical reading, their meaning remains open and depends on the viewer’s interpretation. The choice of the doormat—a domestic object and symbolic threshold—reinforces this ambiguity, turning these “formulas for success” into surfaces of passage that question the illusion of success accessible to all and reveal the invisible structures shaping our lives.</description>
